Pediatric Overweight (POW)
Envision New Mexico is at the forefront of tackling the pediatric overweight epidemic in our state. We train professionals to help families modify set goals, behaviors, and make healthy choices.
Our Program
The Project brings a systematic evidence-based approach to pediatric overweight and obesity. Providers learn how to incorporate a comprehensive pediatric overweight prevention and treatment program in the primary care setting. Providers and staff get training in screening, medical management, and Motivational Interviewing. Participants also receive clinical tools and technical assistance to support an office-based approach to this difficult issue. Participants learn to use the Model for Improvement in order to make real changes of how care is delivered to patients. Data collection of key quality indicators is required, as it is a measurement of these changes.
Eligibility
Participation is restricted to pediatricians and family physicians practicing in New Mexico and on the Navajo Nation. The intervention is designed for practice teams that include the primary care physician and clinic team members such as nursing staff and administration. Participants are encouraged to include all providers from their clinic, as the intervention is based on transforming office systems.
Telehealth
Participants are required to present a minimum of three patients to the pediatric sub-specialty group on COMM-TC.
Program Background
The Pediatric Overweight Quality Improvement Initiative POW QII is a 9-12 month improvement collaborative for practicing physicians in New Mexico. Developed in collaboration with Dr. Scott Gee of Kaiser Permanente in California, this program provides a structured approach to prevention messages and helps providers address the difficult issue of overweight with pediatric patients and their families.
