New MexicoAction for Healthy Kids was instrumental in assisting with the development of nutrition rules that were set forth in competitive foods regulations signed into law by Governor Bill Richardson in January 2006. The new law sets standards for all competitive foods and beverages sold on public school campuses during the school day and fundraisers after school hours. It also governs vending, a la carte, and fundraising sales. The state nutrition rules must also be incorporated into each school district's wellness policy.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation RWJF has worked for several years to promote physical activity and healthy eating among people of all ages. With rates for childhood obesity and related health problems rising steeply, we turned our attention to reversing the obesity epidemic among children-especially those living in low-income communities, where rates of obesity are highest. This focus on youth is in keeping with the Foundation’s longstanding commitment to prevention. Their current work to reverse childhood obesity aims to change policies and community and school environments in ways that support healthy eating and increases physical activity for children and families.
